Unshakable: Where Does Your Confidence Really Live?
What Job understood about confidence that can free you from fear, performance, and the pressure to secure yourself.

True confidence is a rare commodity in a world that feels like it’s vibrating with anxiety. We live in a time where the news cycle is designed to keep your heart rate up and your hope down. Whether it is the fluctuating economy, the stability of your job, or the shrinking value of a retirement fund, there is always something whispering that your security is on thin ice. Consequently, many of us spend our lives building fortresses out of paper, hoping the wind doesn’t blow too hard.
We are finally coming to the home stretch of the book of Job. If anyone had a right to feel like his world had been nuked, it was Job. After chapters of listening to his "friends" tell him why he was a failure, and after God finally stepped in to put everything into perspective, we see a man who had deep roots. Before the trial even started, Job had already decided where his confidence lived.
Job 31:24-25 “If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;”
Job was a wealthy man: one of the wealthiest of his time. However, he realized something that many of us miss: your net worth is not your self-worth. He was defending his integrity, reminding his critics that even when he had everything, those "things" never owned him. He didn’t make gold his hope. He didn’t let his bank account tell him who he was.
Believing Your Own Press Releases
There is a subtle trap we all fall into when things are going well. We begin to believe our own press releases. We look at our successful businesses, our growing ministries, or our comfortable homes and think, "I did this." We start to believe that we are the architects of our own security. Consequently, we begin to trust in the gift rather than the Giver.
I know that feeling all too well. Throughout fifty years of ministry, I have seen seasons of great abundance and seasons of absolute scarcity. I have faced Stage 4 Kidney Cancer and a brutal battle with COVID-19. In those moments, your "gold": whether that’s your health, your reputation, or your finances, cannot save you. If your confidence is tied to those things, you will crumble when they are threatened.
Job is finishing his defense here. He is essentially saying, "I lived right, and I didn't let my heart get hooked on my stuff." He used what he had to bless others. He didn't brag about his wealth because he knew where it came from. Meanwhile, his friends were convinced he must have sinned because he lost it all. They were operating on a performance-based theology: if you're good, you get gold; if you're bad, you get boils. But Job knew better. He knew that true confidence has nothing to do with your circumstances.
The Mirror of the Modern Economy
Let’s get raw for a minute. How much are you trusting in your money right now? Specifically, when you look at the economy and the terrifying forecasts on the news, does your heart sink? If your peace is tied to the Dow Jones, you are going to be a very stressed-out individual.
Many people today find their worlds crumbling because they placed their hope in the wrong things. We have been conditioned to believe that security is found in a "diversified portfolio" or "job security." While those things aren't inherently evil, they make terrible gods. They are shifting sands. If you are a child of God, you were never meant to be sustained by a paycheck; you are sustained by a Person.
Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
This isn't a legalistic "do this to get that" formula. This is an invitation to identity. When you realize that you are already loved, already accepted, and already held by the Creator of the universe, the pressure to "secure" yourself starts to evaporate. You don't have to spend your life frantically gathering gold to feel safe. You can rest because you are a son or a daughter of the King.
Abundance is Not "Stuff"
We often confuse the "abundant life" with an "abundant lifestyle." Jesus was very clear about this distinction. He didn't come so we could have more gold; He came so we could have more of Him.
Luke 12:15 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
If your life is measured by your things, you will always be one crisis away from an identity crisis. Furthermore, you will find yourself constantly comparing your "pile" to someone else’s. This is the exhaustion of the performance-based life. It’s the "Mirror You Keep Trying to Eat": trying to find nourishment in a reflection of success that can never actually feed your soul. For more on breaking free from this, you might find The Big Leap of Faith helpful.
The Superior Reality of Jesus
Job lost his gold, his children, and his health, yet he remained unshakable. Why? Because he had something, or rather, Someone, far superior. He knew that even if his skin was destroyed, he would see God. That is true confidence.
In the New Covenant, we have even more reason to be bold. We aren't just looking forward to a Redeemer; we are united with Him. Christ is in you. The One who walked on water and fed the five thousand is the same One who is looking after your grocery bill and your mortgage. He is not a distant landlord; He is a loving Father.
John 10:10 “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
This abundant life is found in the finished work of Jesus. It is the freedom of knowing that even if the economy collapses and the "gold" disappears, you are still fully known, fully loved, and fully provided for. You don't need to perform for Him to take care of you. You don't need to "earn" His protection. You are being held.
“God is not measuring your worth by your consistency. You are not behind. You are not being graded. You are being held.”
Living in the "Now" Without Fear
So, what do we do when the news forecasters have us terrified? We turn our hearts toward Him. We stop trying to find security in things that are designed to fail. We realize that the Lord Jesus Christ is our all.
Hebrews 13:5 “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
That promise is better than any retirement fund. He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. Specifically, when the bank account is low, He is there. When the job is in danger, He is there. He is your constant, your anchor, and your very present help in trouble.
You don't need gold to trust in. You have Jesus. And because you have Him, you have everything. Stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. You were never meant to power your life through fear or performance. You were meant to live from a place of being loved first.
Finding Your Rest Today
As we wrap up these thoughts from Job, let’s take a breath. If you’ve been feeling the weight of financial stress or the fear of the unknown, let this be your permission to stop striving. You aren't going to "win" at life by accumulating enough stuff to feel safe. Safety is a Person, not a price tag.
Turn your heart toward Him today. Trust that He knows exactly what you need. He has promised to add "all these things" to you as you simply walk with Him. You are secure not because of what you have done, but because of what He has finished.
“Rest doesn't come after you fix yourself. Rest comes first.”
Let’s choose to be like Job: men and women who can say, "Gold was never my hope anyway." Our hope is in the Lord, and that is a confidence that no economic crisis can ever take away.
FAQ: True Confidence and Financial Fear
Is it wrong for a Christian to have wealth or savings?
Not at all. Job was incredibly wealthy, and God called him a righteous man. The issue isn't having gold; it’s making gold your "hope" or "confidence." Money is a great tool, but a terrible master.
How do I stop worrying about the economy when things look so bad?
Worry is usually a signal that we’ve shifted our trust from God to our circumstances. Re-center your identity in the truth that you are a child of God. Remind yourself of Hebrews 13:5: He has promised never to leave you or forsake you, regardless of what the market does.
What does "abundant life" actually mean if I'm struggling financially?
Abundant life is the life of Jesus flowing through you. It is a state of being "full" of His peace, joy, and presence, regardless of your external situation. It’s knowing that you have a superior inheritance that cannot be canceled or stolen.
