Have You Asked God How to Raise Your Children?
A Devotional from Judges 13:12

Training Includes Discipline
I know discipline isn't a popular word today. But the Bible is clear.
Proverbs 22:6
> "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
Training means direction. Guidance. Correction. It's not about being harsh or rigid. It's about loving your children enough to help them grow.
Proverbs 22:15
> "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him."
And then there's the New Testament perspective:
Ephesians 6:4
> "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."
Notice the balance. Don't provoke them to anger. Don't crush their spirit. But do bring them up in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. Grace and truth. Love and boundaries. Together.
Teach Them Salvation Early
One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is an early understanding of the gospel.
2 Timothy 3:15
> "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."
Timothy knew the Scriptures from childhood. That foundation shaped his entire life and ministry.
You should teach your children the Scriptures: and especially salvation: from the time they are small. Don't wait until they're teenagers. Don't assume the church will do it for you. Make it personal. Make it real. Make it home.
The Real Danger
Here's my fear for parents today: God's Word is full of instruction that could make a major difference in your life, and yet you ignore it.
You're concerned about getting them the right education. You teach them facts. You get them involved in socially stimulating events. You worry about who their friends are.
All of that matters. But are you working just as hard to follow God's commands about how to raise the children He has given you?
Have you asked God how to raise your children?
If you haven't: don't you think it's time to seek God and ask Him to help you be the parent He wants you to be?
Rest doesn't come after you fix yourself. Rest comes first. And parenting from a place of rest: trusting God's grace and guidance: is far more effective than parenting from fear or performance.
You're Not Alone in This
If this message stirred something in your heart, I want you to know: you're not behind. You're not being graded. You're being held.
God's not keeping score. He's keeping you. And He wants to walk with you through every stage of parenting: the messy parts, the hard conversations, the sleepless nights, and the joyful breakthroughs.
If you'd like to go deeper into living from God's unconditional love (instead of pressure and performance), I'd encourage you to read The Big Leap of Faith: Believing God Loves You Exactly as You Are. It's a great starting point for anyone who wants to experience the freedom of grace.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Judges 13:12 teach us about parenting?
Judges 13:12 shows us that Manoah's first response to learning about his son's birth was to ask God how to raise him. This teaches us that godly parenting begins with seeking God's wisdom and direction rather than relying solely on our own understanding.
How can I practically seek God's guidance for raising my children?
Start with daily prayer and Bible study focused on what Scripture says about parenting. Pause before major decisions and ask God for wisdom. Surround yourself with godly counsel from your church community. Most importantly, model obedience yourself: your children learn more from watching you than from anything you say.
What if I feel like I've already failed as a parent?
You are not responsible for producing perfect outcomes. Even Samson, born under divine calling and parental obedience, later struggled morally. God calls you to faithfulness in training, not perfection in results. His grace covers your mistakes, and it's never too late to start seeking Him for the road ahead.
