Small Numbers, Big God

Why You Don't Need a Crowd to See a Miracle

1 Samuel 14:6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

Two Guys, No Weapons, and a Massive Enemy

Jonathan and his armor-bearer are staring down the Philistine garrison. The enemy is everywhere. Israel has almost no weapons. 1 Samuel 13:22 tells us that only Saul and Jonathan had swords. Humanly speaking, there is zero chance of victory.

But Jonathan has learned something profound: God can do a work if He wants to. Nothing can stop Him. He can work with many or with few.

So these two men head out to battle. And here's what happens: "So the LORD saved Israel that day" (1 Samuel 14:23). Notice that? Even though Jonathan and his armor-bearer went to battle, it was the LORD who won it.

That's the lesson for all of us. God fights the fight. The battle is the Lord's. He can do great work with many or few. All He's looking for is for us to be faithful and listen to Him.

The Beautiful "Maybe"

I love Jonathan's humility. He doesn't say, "God will definitely work for us." He says, "It may be that the LORD will work for us."

That's faith without presumption. That's confidence in God's power mixed with honest recognition that we're not in control. Jonathan knows he can't manipulate God or guarantee outcomes. He can only step forward in obedience and trust.

That's all any of us can say. I can't promise you that God will work in the exact way you want. But this much I know: He might. And that "might" is enough to move forward.

You do what's right. You stand up to sin. You stand up for Jesus. You open your mouth and witness to your friends and neighbors. You can't save them, but you never know what God will use or when He will work.

Yours is not to reason why or when. Yours is to do what you should.

Small Numbers Don't Worry God

Maybe you're looking around at your church or ministry and feeling discouraged. The numbers are small. The resources are limited. You wonder if you can really make a difference in a world that seems to be racing toward darkness.

Listen: do not look around and think we're in trouble or that God isn't working. Instead, realize that God has a unique job for you to do, even if you're alone.

Remember: there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few. Nothing can stop God from doing what He wants.

The offering you give makes a difference. The prayers you pray make a difference. The work you do makes a difference. You know that because you know God will take what you do and multiply it. He's just looking for someone to step forward and act.

I've spent over 50 years in ministry and missions. I've seen God do incredible things with "just a few." I've watched Him take small groups of faithful believers and turn them into movements. I've seen tiny offerings become life-changing resources. I've witnessed prayers prayed in obscurity shake nations.

God doesn't need your crowd. He needs your faithfulness.

If you're feeling small or outnumbered today, you're in good company. Most of the heroes in Scripture felt that way. Moses felt inadequate. Gideon had to be convinced. David was the youngest and least likely. Mary was a nobody from Nazareth.

God specializes in using the small, the weak, and the overlooked. That's His favorite way to work, so no one can claim the glory but Him.

You're Not the Hero (And That's Good News)

Here's the grace twist in this whole story: Jonathan and his armor-bearer aren't the heroes. God is.

Yes, they acted. Yes, they were brave. Yes, they stepped out in faith. But verse 23 is crystal clear: "So the LORD saved Israel that day."

We aren't the heroes of this story. We are the "little people" God chooses to use. He takes our little lives and what little we can offer and makes an eternal difference.

That should take so much pressure off of you. You don't have to be great. You don't have to have all the answers. You don't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.

You just have to show up. You just have to be willing. You just have to take the next faithful step.

God will do the rest.

This is the heart of what I write about over at The Big Leap of Faith: Believing God Loves You Exactly As You Are. God isn't disappointed in you. He's not measuring your worth by your consistency or your results. He loves you. He's chosen you. And He will work through you: not because you're extraordinary, but because He is.

Move Forward Anticipating His Work

So what do you do today?

You move forward, anticipating that God will work.

You don't wait until you feel ready. You don't wait until the numbers are bigger or the resources are more plentiful. You don't wait until you have it all figured out.

You act now. You pray now. You give now. You serve now. You witness now.

And you trust that God will take your obedience and do something beautiful with it.

Maybe you've been holding back because you feel like what you have to offer is too small. Maybe you've been waiting for the "right time" or the "right opportunity." Maybe you've been convinced that God can't use someone like you.

Friend, God is not restrained by your limitations. He's not looking at your resume, your bank account, or your platform. He's looking at your heart. He's looking for faithfulness.

Jonathan didn't wait for an army. He didn't wait for better weapons. He didn't wait for permission. He said, "Come, let us go," and he moved.

You can do the same.

The world doesn't need more people waiting for perfect conditions. It needs more people willing to step out in faith: even when the odds are against them, even when they feel small, even when they don't know how it will turn out.

It may be that the LORD will work for us.

That's enough. That's always been enough.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

I want to leave you with this reminder: the battle is the Lord's. It always has been. It always will be.

You're not responsible for saving the world. You're not responsible for winning every fight. You're not responsible for making everything work out perfectly.

You're responsible for faithfulness. You're responsible for obedience. You're responsible for showing up and doing what God has called you to do.

And when you do that: when you step out in faith, even with small numbers and limited resources: you give God room to work. You give Him an opportunity to show Himself strong. You become part of the story He's writing.

I love how God used Jonathan. I love how he and his armor-bearer, all alone, chased the enemy. But I love even more how God uses little people like you and me. He takes our small offerings and makes an eternal difference.

Don't let the small numbers worry you. We're not dealing with what we can do. We're dealing with what He can do.

And we can trust Him to do big things.

FAQ: Small Numbers, Big God

Q: What if I feel too small or inadequate to be used by God?

That's exactly where God loves to work. He specializes in using the weak, the small, and the overlooked so that His power is displayed, not ours. Your inadequacy is not a disqualification: it's an invitation to watch God work.

Q: How do I know if God will bless my small efforts?

You don't know for certain, and that's okay. Jonathan said, "It may be that the LORD will work for us." Faith isn't about guarantees; it's about obedience. Step forward in faithfulness and trust God with the results.

Q: What does it mean that "there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few"?

It means God is not limited by numbers, resources, or circumstances. He can do mighty works with a huge army or with just two people. Your job is to be faithful; His job is to do the miracle.
