The Harvest of Mercy

Understanding the Fruit of the Spirit

For over fifty years, I have walked the paths of ministry, from the crowded cities to the high Andean mountains of Peru. During those decades, I often viewed the Christian life as a series of mountains to climb and boxes to check. Specifically, I viewed the Fruit of the Spirit as a spiritual grocery list I needed to fulfill through sheer grit and determination. However, everything changed when I faced the dark valley of Stage 4 Kidney Cancer and a harrowing battle with COVID.

In those moments of weakness, when I couldn't even "try" to be patient or joyful, I discovered a profound truth. The harvest of the Spirit isn't something you produce; it is something that is produced in you because of the mercy that follows you. Therefore, if you feel exhausted by the "try harder" treadmill of religion, I want to invite you into a different way of living. We are going to look at how grace, not effort, brings forth the fruit God desires.

The Struggle of the Checklist

Many of us grew up thinking that the Fruit of the Spirit was a character assessment. Consequently, we spend our days grading ourselves. We ask, "Was I peaceful today? Was I long-suffering when that person cut me off in traffic?" If we fail, we feel the weight of God’s disappointment. Meanwhile, we forget that a branch doesn't strain to produce a grape; it simply stays connected to the vine.

During my years in Peru, I saw many young missionaries burn out because they were trying to manufacture love and joy in their own strength. They felt they were being "canceled" by their own expectations or by harsh criticism from others when they didn't measure up. I have felt that same pressure. But we must realize that the Christian life was never meant to be a performance.

“The Christian life was never meant to be powered by fear, pressure, or performance. It was meant to be lived from being loved first.”

When we start from a place of being loved, the pressure evaporates. This is why understanding the big leap of faith is so vital. You have to believe God loves you exactly as you are before you can ever hope to see His fruit grow in your life.

Mercy as the Soil of the Fruit

The Bible speaks of sowing and reaping, but we often miss the context of mercy. In the Old Testament, the harvest was always intended as an act of mercy toward the poor and the stranger. Similarly, the Fruit of the Spirit grows best in the soil of received mercy. Specifically, when we realize how much we have been forgiven, we naturally become more forgiving.

Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Notice that it says "fruit," singular. It is one harvest with many flavors. Furthermore, these qualities are the natural byproduct of the Holy Spirit's work in a heart that is at rest. After my diagnosis, when my body was failing, my wife Betty stood by me with a quiet, steady faith. We have been married for over 52 years, and I watched the fruit of "longsuffering" and "gentleness" manifest in her not because she was trying to be a "good wife," but because she was resting in the Lord’s goodness toward us.

In those hospital rooms, I learned that these tumors were not bigger than God’s grace. When you are at your lowest, you don't need a checklist; you need a Comforter.

Leading from a Place of Rest

If you are a ministry leader, this message is especially for you. We often lead from a place of "shoulds" and "musts." We feel that we must project the Fruit of the Spirit to our congregations and teams. However, leading from effort always leads to exhaustion. Instead, we are called to lead from rest.

> “Rest doesn't come after you fix yourself. Rest comes first.”

When I mentor younger men through Alignment Ministries, I tell them that their primary job is to stay in the love of God. For instance, if you are not convinced that God is for you, you will always try to use your "fruit" to earn His favor. But mercy is not trailing behind you with conditions; it is running toward you with intention.

Leaders who lead from rest are magnetic. They don't have to demand respect; the "gentleness" and "goodness" of Christ in them draw people in. Therefore, stop trying to grow the fruit and start focusing on the Vine.

The Finished Work and the Final Harvest

The beauty of the New Covenant is that the work is already finished. Jesus didn't just provide a way for us to be "better" people; He gave us His very life. Consequently, the Fruit of the Spirit is actually the life of Jesus being lived out through you. It is His love, His joy, and His peace.

You are not behind. You are not being graded. You are being held. Whether you are facing a medical crisis, a ministry struggle, or personal failure, God’s mercy is after you right now, ready to bring real grace and honest hope.

Hosea 10:12 “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.”

As we seek the Lord, He rains His righteousness on us. We don't have to manufacture the rain; we just have to stand in it. The harvest of mercy is guaranteed because it depends on His faithfulness, not ours.

Moving Forward in Assurance

As you go about your week, I want you to remember that you are loved beyond measure. The Fruit of the Spirit is a promise, not a threat. It is the beautiful result of a life that has stopped running and started resting in the Father’s arms.

If you’ve spent years feeling like you’re not "fruitful" enough, let that burden go today. God is not disappointed in you. He is not measuring your worth by your consistency. He is looking at His Son, and if you are in Christ, He sees the perfect harvest already.

“Mercy is not trailing behind you with conditions. It is running toward you with intention.”

Walk out into your day knowing that goodness and mercy are following you. Rest in that, and watch what God begins to grow.

FAQ: Understanding the Fruit of the Spirit

How can I grow the Fruit of the Spirit when I feel spiritually dry?

Growth doesn't come from your own effort, but from staying connected to Jesus, the Vine. Focus on resting in His finished work and acknowledging His unconditional love for you, even in your dryness.

Is there a difference between spiritual gifts and the Fruit of the Spirit?

Yes, spiritual gifts are given for service and vary among believers, while the fruit is the inward character of Christ meant to be evident in every believer. The fruit is the natural byproduct of walking in the Spirit rather than a specific task-oriented ability.

What should I do if I feel like I am failing at being "patient" or "gentle"?

Remember that you are not being graded on your performance. Instead of trying harder to be patient, turn your heart toward the mercy God has shown you, and allow His peace to settle your soul.
