The Shield of Favor

Why You’re Already Surrounded by Grace

I often find myself awake, staring at the ceiling and running through a mental checklist of everything that could go wrong. Specifically, I think about the economy, my family's mounting needs, or the weight of the ministry. Maybe you do the same. We live in a world that demands high performance and constant vigilance, leaving us exhausted and fearful. However, Scripture offers a completely different reality for the child of God. In the middle of our mess and our Monday morning anxieties, we find a promise that changes everything.

Austin Gardner has spent over 50 years in ministry, and if there is one thing I’ve learned through Stage 4 cancer and global health crises, it’s that we are not holding ourselves up. God is the one holding us. When we look at David's words in the Psalms, we see a picture of a believer who isn’t just "getting by." Instead, this person is completely enveloped by the goodness of God. Specifically, the Shield of Favor offers a form of security the world simply cannot provide.

Psalm 5:11-12 “But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”

Understanding the Condition of Trust

We often read verses like this and immediately slip into a "worker" mindset. We think, "If I can just trust enough, or love enough, then God will finally protect me." Consequently, we turn a beautiful promise into a heavy burden. But let’s look closer at what David is saying. He mentions those who put their trust in Him. For me, that started with trusting the Lord Jesus Christ for my salvation. It continues today by trusting Him to meet my needs every single hour.

However, we don’t trust God because we are great "trusters." We trust Him because He is fundamentally trustworthy. I love Him because He first loved me, as we see in Romans 5:8 and 1 John 4:19. Therefore, trust isn't a performance you put on to get God’s attention. It is the natural response of an heir who realizes their Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills. When you stop trying to earn His protection and start resting in His character, the anxiety begins to fade.

The Defender in the Gap

David tells us to rejoice because God defends us. Think about that for a moment. In the ancient world, a defender stood between the vulnerable and the predator. Today, we have enemies that are just as real. Satan wants to accuse you, sin wants to destroy your peace, and the pressures of the world want to crush your spirit. Nevertheless, they cannot get to you because God has stepped into the gap.

I used to worry constantly about whether God was pleased with me. I felt like I was being graded on a curve, and I was failing. But the "finished work" of Jesus tells a different story. Because of the blood shed on Calvary, you are already accepted. You are already defended. Consequently, you can stop looking over your shoulder. Whether you are facing a failing economy or a family crisis, you aren't fighting these battles alone. God Himself stands as your personal Defender. He isn't defending you because you’ve been perfect; He is defending you because you belong to Him.

Surrounded by a Massive Shield

The most striking part of this passage is the description of favor. David says that God will "compass" the righteous with favor as with a shield. In the original language, this doesn't refer to a small buckler that you move around to catch a single arrow. Specifically, it refers to the tsin'nāh, a massive, full-body shield that covered a soldier from head to toe.

This means you are surrounded. To be "compassed" means that everywhere you turn, you run into God’s favor. For example, when I look back at my battle with cancer or the times I felt "canceled" by the opinions of others, I can see this shield. It was there in the hospital room and in the quiet moments of loneliness.

God’s Mercy is not trailing behind you with conditions. It is running toward you with intention. You are not just "blessed" in one area of your life while vulnerable in another. You are wrapped in a 360-degree perimeter of divine delight. This favor is His acceptance of you in Christ. It is His "good pleasure" directed toward you, not because of what you did yesterday, but because of who He is today.

A Response of Radical Joy

When you truly grasp that you are defended and surrounded, your reaction changes. David says we should "shout for joy." Now, I know some of us are a bit more reserved. However, it is hard to stay quiet when you realize the King of the universe is your personal bodyguard. This isn't a fake, "put on a happy face" kind of joy. It is a deep-seated satisfaction in Jesus that remains even when the circumstances are screaming.

Are you rejoicing today? Are you singing and shouting because you know the outcome is already secured? Naturally, we get distracted by the storms. But when we refocus on the relationship we have with Him, joy is the only logical response. We have been bought by the blood, filled with the Spirit, and tucked away behind a shield of grace. That is a reason to be joyful!

Moving from Performance to Satisfaction

The religious world wants to keep you on a treadmill. It tells you that if you do more, God will love you more. It suggests that if you work harder, the shield will get thicker. But grace tells us that the shield is already as thick as it can get because it is made of Christ’s own righteousness.

I want to encourage you to stop the performance. Stop worrying if you’ve done "enough" to keep God on your side. He is already there. He has already blessed you. He is already defending your family and your future. Find your total satisfaction in Jesus today. When you realize you are an heir and not a hired hand, you can finally breathe. You can finally rest.

If you are struggling to believe that God really feels this way about you, I want you to read more about The Big Leap of Faith. It is time to believe that God loves you exactly as you are, not as you should be.

FAQ about God’s Favor and Grace

How can I feel God’s favor when my life feels like it’s falling apart?

Favor is a covenant fact, not a temporary feeling. Even when life is hard, God is working all things for your good because you are "in Christ." We trust His promise over our emotions, knowing that the shield of favor remains even in the dark.

Do I lose my "shield of favor" when I sin or fail?

No, because your shield is not built by your behavior; it is provided by Jesus' finished work. While sin can disrupt your fellowship and joy, it does not cancel your covenant identity. You are still defended by the blood of Calvary.

What is the difference between earning favor and resting in it?

Earning favor is a "worker" mindset that leads to exhaustion and fear of failure. Resting in favor is an "heir" mindset that understands the blessing was inherited through Christ. We obey and love God because we are already accepted, not so that we can become accepted.
