Don't forget God

Austin Gardner • September 28, 2023

Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: 12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; 13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; 14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;  Deuteronomy 8:11–14.

God, through Moses, tells His people to be careful that they do not forget who it is that has done so much for them. He warns them that they will be enjoying things He has done for them and forget Him, even though He did it!

He said that they would eat and be full. That is, they would have everything. Deuteronomy 8:10

They would have houses they didn't build, but He gave them. They would be successful in the farming and ranching efforts. Deuteronomy 8 13

But they would forget Him. He brought them out of slavery. He was giving them the promised land. He was pouring out His blessings on them.

The danger was that success would breed pride and lift them up. Deuteronomy 8:14.

The question for us today is, Do we recognize that God has done so much for us?

Do we remember where He brought us from? Do we know what we would get if He were not kind and gracious to us?

Have we become lifted in pride because we think that we blessed ourselves? Do we believe that we have made ourselves and not God?

Did our apparent prosperity cause us to grow proud and cold towards God?

I challenge you with today's thought to not forget God. All that we have or are is something He has done for us!

How often do we get proud of our accomplishments? We change our lives. We better ourselves. We become an ethical and moral person. The story is that we were lost in sin and doing wrong. God saved us. He converted us. He changed us. But we like to forget that part.No need to admit we couldn't change. We need a little credit for our advancement, right?

God didn't want His people to be proud of all that had happened. He didn't want them to forget all that He had done. God had rescued them from slavery. He had gotten them their freedom. Now, they needed to remember that.

Do you forget where you were when He found you and saved you? Has this caused you to be prideful? In your pride, do you like to see how you changed your life instead of admitting that He did great work in you? Take time to meditate on this truth today.
