Tower of Babel Mentality

Reaching the World in our Generation

Genesis 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

God, the creator, wants man, the creation, to recognize Him for who He is and what He has done. People, in their sinful condition, always seek to establish his name. We no longer desire to raise a tower that will reach heaven, but we build churches and ministries that magnify our names. I wonder just how tired our God gets of our Tower of Babel mentality? His goal is for His people to be dispersed over the face of the whole earth, telling the lost the glorious gospel. How committed to Him and His cause are you and your church?

What do you imagine for God? God separated man and destroyed his work because whatever he thought about, he could do. How much do we think about “world evangelism” and doing all in our power to get the gospel to every creature? What do you spend your time dreaming about or planning? When did you last think about doing something big to bring honor and glory to God by evangelizing the world?

Humanity is determined to rise to godlike status. They demanded to be famous. They preferred to create a name for themselves. God wished them to recognize Him and glorify His name. That wasn’t necessary, since God had created them and had already come to them. Instead, they look for how to climb up into the heavens to know God.

God confused their language to hinder their collaboration in doing their will instead of God’s will. He caused them to all speak different languages, similar to how we experience them today. These languages make marked differences between us. We cannot talk well.

Our fundamental hope should be to lift God, not ourselves. Our genuine passion should be to talk together about getting the truth to the world. Now languages hinder the spread of the gospel message. We have to study the language and the culture to understand people and communicate the gospel.

They need to know God, but do not know how. They want to be God but can’t, so they must learn the truth. Maybe you would consider learning a language and culture to carry the gospel of Jesus to the world.

Humanity was trying to make a name for itself. He wanted to prove that he could live and make something of himself without God. They got together and built a giant tower that would reach heaven. There is a lot we do not understand about the tower, but we understand that man was together capable of anything that he set his mind to.

God came down and confused the language, so they couldn’t talk to each other. Men spread out with others that they could understand.

Our aim in life should be to know God and serve Him. Our ambition in life is often to prove that we do not need God and can make something meaningful of ourselves on our own.

Remember who is in charge. Use your abilities for Him! Recall who gave you the ability to speak.
