Our first ministry

Just mind God

versión en español a continuación

Betty and I went to see the pastor, Brother Billy. I was going to try to be courteous and tell him that I would be looking for another church. I loved him and didn't want to hurt him, but I wanted to be in the ministry with all my heart.

When I got close, he started talking before I could say anything. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card. He said, look, Austin. I have been trying to find a place for you since we first talked.

I just wanted to have a ministry of some sort, but my pastor, friend, and mentor had even greater things in mind for me. This pastor, Brother Willard, wants you to be his youth director. What! I had never even dreamed that big.

I called Brother Willard that very next day. He said that Brother Billy had been talking to him. He would like me to come to the church and tell them about myself. They were going to call me to work with them.

That first church was more than anyone could ever expect. I couldn't believe it. A dream I hadn't even dared to dream was coming true.

The pastor, Brother Willard, was a kind, ole country preacher. I will love him till the day I die! Brother Willard knew and loved God.

Brother Willard and I prayed together every Sunday morning before church. He didn't even know what a youth director was but was willing to give a 19-year-old kid a chance. Betty and I were both very excited.

Soon we were working in that church. In that first service, I gave my testimony as the pastor had requested. He had spoken with me, and the church had no idea about his request.

I later found out that several of the young people couldn't understand why I talked so much about myself. They thought I was supposed to preach. I thought I was supposed to share my testimony.

God allowed Betty and me to work in that church for over two years. We learned so much. When I asked the pastor what he wanted me to do, he looked startled.

Didn't God call you? Doesn't He tell you what to do? He said, "mind God!" I asked if there was a Sunday School class I could teach. He said no, not really. We pretty much have it all covered.

So there I was in a new church but still no ministry. Within a few weeks, I took over a Sunday School class, a Training Union Class, a youth meeting on Monday nights for prayer, and a Wednesday night Bible study.

I was living the dream. The church started me off with a salary of $25 a week. The minimum wage was $65. The pastor had indicated that they would get me to a minimum, but that wouldn't happen for over two years.

I worked a job, worked in the youth ministry, went to college, and spent what little time I had left with Betty. Betty sewed and made a little money that way.

It didn't matter. We were the happiest young couple you had ever seen. Betty was still a new Christian, but she loved me and encouraged me. She helped me in everything that I attempted to do.

We were 19 years old, newly married, starting in a new ministry, and living the life of a dream come true. The young people of the church were the greatest you can imagine.

What a wonderful pastor God had given me to recommend me to my first ministry. What a wonderful man to be the first pastor I would ever serve. God was pouring out His blessings on us.

Learn and see God's blessings in your life. While I was getting frustrated with my pastor, he was at work trying to help me. Without him, I do not know where I would be ministry-wise. He opened doors. He helped me. Your pastor loves you and has your best interest at heart. Get close to him and let him know your heart.

Trust that God will put good men in your life to bless you and prepare you for whatever God has in your future.

Know that even in your mess-ups and misunderstandings, God is working in you and will turn it to His glory and honor.

Love your spouse. Both of you work at blessing the other. Challenge and motivate your spouse to be all God has called them to be. God made the two of you for each other. Trust that He is using you to work together for His kingdom.

Be grateful and think of all God's good in your life. Don't be critical and judgmental. See that God uses regular people to bless you and take you where you need to be.

No podía creerlo.

¿Dios no te llamó? ¿No te dice Él qué hacer? Él dijo: “¡Obedece a Dios!"

No importaba.

Él me ayudó. Acércate a él y hazle conocer tu corazón.

Ama a tu cónyuge.

No seas criticón y juzgón.
